“…the No.1 kind of risk that the everyday consumer has is a water claim,” USAA assistant vice-president of P&C innovation Jon-Mike Kowall told Wall Street Journal. In this blog post, we are going to discuss the basics of basement waterproofing.
We hope you find yourself dry when walking down those basement stairs, but with statistics as high as 1 in 50 homeowners needing waterproofing contract work, this frustrating scenario could play out sooner than later for you.
Why is my basement leaking?
Sometimes the cause of the leaking water is obvious, a broken plumbing pipe, water heater or a leaking basement window, but in some cases, the answer is not so simple. The most common cause of water penetration in basements is a leaking foundation. Water can seep in through cracks and mortar joints, through the porous nature of the concrete walls, or water penetrating over or under the footer. Over time as the foundation ages, the initial waterproofing means will slowly deteriorate and need to be updated.
I don’t see water, but it smells musty.
As the initial waterproofing means begin to slowly erode, water can seep in through tiny cracks and the porous nature of concrete. It then settles into your walls. Not only does this create the humidity and musty smell, but it can also lead to mold and major wall damage if not properly addressed.
What are my options for waterproofing?
Waterproofing your basement can happen in a number of different
ways. You may even be tempted to DIY. Many treatments do stop the leaking water temporarily but then sooner or just a little bit later, you find yourself right back where you were. This is due to the fact that many methods of waterproofing do not address ALL of the ways that water can enter your basement. Our Aquaguard Waterproofing system does just that! In fact, we effectively counter all of the risk factors of water seepage that other systems leave behind. In all of our years of service, Aquaguard has never had a system failure or breach of warranty. You can expect this same level of service and commitment when we address and repair leaking water in your basement.
